Description: | Missa Remissionem Peccatorum (Mass for the Forgiveness of Sins) is a 21st century Latin mass composed for concert performance in a secular society, reflecting very different circumstances from those of liturgical composers in earlier times. It would certainly be naïve to think that the texts of the mass will be received by audiences today as expressions of universal truths, or affirmations of a unifying faith. But it is the composer’s conviction that our secular era has much to learn from the wisdom handed down to us by ages past, including the teachings of faith. One such teaching, perhaps the most important one, is forgiveness. In addition to the canonical texts of the mass, other scriptural passages are added which emphasize forgiveness rather than condemnation, mercy rather than judgment, healing and redemption and the making of peace, in the hopes that these words can be meaningful for secular persons and persons of faith alike. Musical choices in this piece are similarly motivated by a desire to draw upon tradition in a way that is relevant to our own times. Elements of harmony, rhythm, and texture at times suggest traditional musical thinking, and at other times suggest less familiar, perhaps less comfortable, new realities. Each of the six movements is given a distinct musical setting based on the composer’s interpretation of the tone and meaning of the texts: the Introit is full of yearning and supplication; the Kyrie is very dark; the Gloria and the Sanctus are bright and jubilant; the Agnus Dei is the movement of resolution and reconciliation; and the Credo, in its antiphonal “stile antico,” continuous harmonic wash, and suspension of metrical motion, is a musical representation of timelessness.
