The Leading Note Celebrates 15 Years!

November 19, 2014

The Leading Note music store is celebrating its 15th anniversary on December 4, 2014!

  • 15 years of helping our customers find the finest print music editions,
  • 15 years of supporting the classical music community, and
  • 15 years of great memories, hard work, and fun.

We could not have made it this far without the support of our wonderful music community in Ottawa and beyond – so, a big THANK YOU to all!

Open House on Saturday, November 29

The celebration starts on Saturday, November 29, when we’ll be hosting an open house anniversary party.  If you happen to be in town, please visit us any time after 5 p.m. for wine, cheese, music and memories.

Celebration Week – November 29 to December 6

Saturday, November 29 also marks the start of The Leading Note’s week of giving back to the community.  For this week, we will direct 10% of all purchases* to music organizations, as chosen by you – our customers.

For in-store purchases, customers may choose any local music organization.  However, for out-of-town online purchases, we have to place some constraints on the process.  Donations will be limited to the following worthy organizations (see below for a description of each):

  • CFMTA (Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association),
  • CAMMAC (Canadian Amateur Musicians/Musiciens Amateurs du Canada), or
  • The Leading Note Foundation’s OrKidstra program.

In our shopping cart, simply indicate in the Special Instructions field where you would like your 10% directed.

*Limitations: Our promotion is limited to purchases made by individuals.  It does not apply to bulk orders (e.g large orders for choirs, orchestras or schools).

Organizations for Out-of-town On-line Orders
Below is a description of each of the organizations that can be specified for an out-of-town on-line order. Simply indicate in the Special Instructions field where you would like your 10% directed.

1. CFMTA (www.cfmta.org)

Where would any of us be as musicians without the support and encouragement of music teachers? CFMTA, the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations, includes a membership of approximately 3500 teachers with Provincial/Territorial organizations in all provinces and the Yukon. Donations made to CFMTA will be directed to their Canada Music Week activities which include prizes for young composers, musicians, and writers across the country. The Leading Note counts many music teachers among our most loyal customers, so are proud to give back to CFMTA.

2. CAMMAC (www.cammac.ca)

CAMMAC, Canadian Amateur Musicians/Musiciens Amateurs du Canada, is an organization which is especially significant to The Leading Note. CAMMAC’s summer music centre at Lake MacDonald in the Laurentian mountains is where the owners of The Leading Note (husband and wife team Gary McMillen and Tina Fedeski) first met. And CAMMAC Ottawa’s popular “Come Sing Messiah” event was the site of The Leading Note’s first sales (of Messiah scores, naturally) – the evening before the store had officially opened! We recognize that music learning brings life-long enjoyment and want to ensure that CAMMAC remains vibrant, offering great opportunities for amateur adult players to make music together. The Leading Note is happy to be able to give back to CAMMAC and donations will be directed to their campaign to build an Endowment Fund.

3. OrKidstra (www.leadingnotefoundation.org)

With the passionate belief in the transformative social power of music, The Leading Note Foundation’s OrKidstra program began in 2007 with 30 inner city children. Now with 350 children ages 5-18 from 42 linguistic and cultural backgrounds, OrKidstra is far more than a music program – it is a way to empower children and build community through the universal language of music. OrKidstra instills life skills (e.g. respect, commitment, teamwork, responsibility) through the joy of making music together which help the children achieve their true potential.

OrKidstra is inspired by the El Sistema program which began in the barrios of Venezuela 40 years ago and which has proven to the world that music can be an agent of social change.
