The End Of An Era!

July 22, 2020

On Thursday, April 30, 2020, The Leading Note moved out of it’s downtown Ottawa location at 370 Elgin St. The original plan was that the move to Long & McQuade’s Hunt Club location would take place during the last week of April. However, the COVID-19 situation threw a monkey wrench into all of that and the transition is on hold indefinitely. Many, many, many thanks to Kevin Burke and Wendy Berkelaar for sticking with us and helping us to make it through the month of April.

So, Tina and I ended up somehow finding a way to move the remaining inventory to our house. This blog documents the process…

We decided that the first step was to move all of the good book shelves out of the shop front. Since our inventory was considerably reduced by this time, we were able to compress things and replace these good shelves with a few crappy ones from our back room. Ideally, we would have liked to try to sell the shelves, but we didn’t think that arranging for a number of people to come into the store to look at them was such a great idea given the COVID-19 situation. So, we hired a couple of movers to take our piano and all of the shelves to our house. While some of the shelves wound up being used in our house, guess where the other shelves ended up?

Packing up… and moving into our house.

Empty shelves in the store…

As any customer who has been in our store remembers, the wallpaper in a good part of the store consisted of old posters for concerts put on by local groups. All the music and notes, aĺl the practice and rehearsals, all the love, passion and commitment, all the melodies and harmony, all the hundreds of concerts and thousands of audience members … what a rich community. All in 2 recycling boxes…

When we took over the store next to us (ABM Records) back in 2004, the first thing that we did was to knock a hole in the wall and build a proper doorway linking the two sides of our shop. Now it was time to undo all of that…

We tried to sell our green display bins (which were actually hosiery racks purchased from Eaton’s), but with no luck. When we finally hired someone to come to take them away, since they were so heavy, the easiest way of getting them out of the shop was to break them apart. Armegeddon…

Packing up the last thing…

Goodbye – and one last thanks to the countless number of customers who made our 20 years in this location such a wonderful experience…
