We're hiring

The Leading Note is Canada’s classical and choral print music specialist.  The store opened in 1999 and developed into what is now Ottawa’s classical music hub.  Over the last few years, our customer base has grown geographically throughout Canada and the US via our vibrant online store.

The Assistant Manager reports to the General Manager of The Leading Note and will be working with The Leading Note’s committed owners and team.  This position is multi-functional and involves a diverse range of responsibilities.  This part-time, career-oriented position is long-term and may evolve over time.  This employee will play a key role in the growth of both on-line and in-store aspects of the business.


Customer service and Special Orders: (50%)

  • Research print music requests
  • Organize and oversee receipt of special orders
  • Communicate directly with customers (by e-mail, phone, and in-person)
  • Enter updated syllabi requirement in database
  • Enter and categorize new issues in database
  • Maintain customer e-mail database
  • Other related duties

Social Media Marketing: (10%)

  • Produce content, including photography, for social media (Facebook and Instagram)
  • Schedule social media posts in collaboration with the General Manager
  • Respond to customer engagement on social media

Shipping: (35%)

  • Manage all shipping of orders
  • Manage all on-line orders
  • Prepare customer invoices

Book keeping: (5%)

  • Enter supplier invoices into accounting program




  • Passion for and knowledge of classical music (classically trained musicians preferred)
  • Self-starter, strong initiative
  • Enthusiasm for small, community-oriented business
  • Excellent English language communication skills
  • Computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ease with using Social Media (e.g. Facebook and Instagram)
  • Familiarity with the Royal Conservatory of Music’s (RCM) curriculum
  • Excellent multi-tasking ability and exceptional organizational skills
  • A sense of humour!


  • Music/arts administration/librarian background
  • Retail or customer service experience
  • Knowledge of print music publishing
  • Strong photography and social media skills
  • Strong graphic design skills
  • Experience using Simply Accounting software
  • French and other languages


Job location:

The Leading Note music store is located on Elgin Street in downtown Ottawa.  All work is performed on-site.


The Assistant Manager is a part-time position of a minimum of 20 hours per week (ideally four hours per day from Monday to Friday), starting in late-July/early-August. The salary range will be in line with experience. A performance review will take place after the first month and after the three month probation period.
